ABOUT US

1969-
Founded in 1969 by a consortium of various business leaders, religious social groups who met to discuss two major projects on Sunset Park's waterfront.

1978- The year 1978 saw the renovation of twenty homes with funding through the Small Homes Improvement Program, NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development -HPD, and Community Development Block grant -CDBG funds. Through U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department, HUD Section 8 funding and a partnership formed with private developers, SPRC began renovating multiple dwellings. In 1979, Sunset Park was named one of the ten original NYC Neighborhood Strategy Areas/NSA. This designation was achieved by working with Community Board #7 and other community organizations, ensuring the flow of increased CDBG and HUD Section 8 funds.

1982- SPRC was involved in every facet of NSA Section 8 housing development, from acting as general contractor to interviewing prospective tenants. SPRC became the managing agent at completion of construction. SPRC increased its housing management and maintenance capabilities by signing a community Management Program with HPD> This program again provided CDBG funds to renovate deteriorated city-owned buildings. The goal of the program was to transfer ownership of these buildings to tenants of SPRC. In addition, SPRC also implemented a technical assistance program for homeowners and tenants on housing management and maintenance.

2000- Entering the new millennium, SPRC is serving over 200 households annually through our weatherization services. We are currently seeking to pursue alternate funding and partner with other agencies to continue our redevelopment and acquisition mission for vacant buildings throughout Brooklyn. We continue to manage buildings, provide technical assistance and organize tenants associations.
